Principal Tunnel Engineer

Role purpose
Client company is working to build its staff capability in the tunnelling area, specifically in response to an opportunity to support a design-build team for the design and construction of the Access to the Region’s Core (ARC) tunnel under the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey.
Company has held teaming discussions with GZA, a geotechnical consulting firm, to pursue this work in cooperation with a strong regional or national construction firm. In order to fulfill our early commitment to this project, we are seeking to hire an experienced underground engineer to help lead the pursuit efforts.
Essence of role – key accountabilities
The principal function of this position is to:
• lead a team of underground engineers in the pursuit of the ARC tunnelling design-build project
• help build an effective in-house NOAM regional capability
• work with our existing team on other pursuits.
The priorities of this role include:
• Responsible for representing Company at various meetings with our consulting and construction partners.
• Leading the delivery of large-scale underground design projects.
• Responsible for management of a multi-disciplinary team of 10-15+ design engineers (possibly including sub consultants) projects as required.
Job requirements
The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge. These points should align with the key areas of responsibility:
• leading the delivery of large-scale underground design projects
• working as part of a design-build team
• building and managing a diverse team of in-house underground design professionals
• successful completion of design-build projects, which typically involve working under stringent time and budgetary constraints
• knowledge of the US underground market a plus – this person would also be assisting in the identification of project opportunities as well as design professional to add to the Companies team
• ability to manage multi-disciplinary teams including engineers from skill sets outside of tunnelling
• experience of a variety of tunnelling techniques, such as TBM, NATM and cut & cover preferred.
• active US PE registration (NY or CA preferred)
• 15 years of relevant underground engineering experience
• project Management of large scale or multi-disciplinary design teams involving in-house staff and sub consultants
• experience building and managing underground engineering teams
